West Bengal CID Probes TMC Signature Forgery Allegations
On Tuesday, the West Bengal CID searched the Trinamool Congress central party office at 30B Harish Chatterjee Street and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's office on Camac Street in connection with alleged signature forgeries of party MLAs.
The probe stems from a May 19 document submitted to the West Bengal Assembly Secretariat endorsing MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition, which several legislators alleged contained forged signatures without their consent.
By June 3, rebel camp members claimed more than 50 signatures on the endorsement document were forged, prompting TMC to expel MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha after they formally complained to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee.
Investigators previously summoned Abhishek Banerjee, who sought 15 days citing health issues; meanwhile, former MP Subhasish Chakraborty blocked officials, accusing them of "obstructing the investigation" during a standoff at the party office.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee attended an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on Monday, June 8, 2026, as the ongoing forgery investigation continues to strain the opposition party's internal cohesion.
