Sierra Leone Drops Treason Charges Against Ex-President Koroma
The attorney general filed a notice to discontinue the case, leaving Koroma free to return after charges tied to the 2023 coup attempt were dropped.
On Tuesday, Sierra Leone's government dropped treason charges against former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who was arrested following an alleged coup attempt in 2023. The attorney general's office stated Koroma is now free to return home.
Authorities accused Koroma of involvement in the November 2023 coup attempt, where armed attackers stormed military and police facilities, resulting in around 20 deaths. At least 80 people were arrested in connection with the violence.
Under a deal brokered by the West African regional bloc Ecowas, Koroma traveled to Nigeria in January 2024 for medical treatment after being released from house arrest in Sierra Leone. He never returned until now.
Responding to the dropped charges, Koroma expressed gratitude to Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. He noted his "enduring conviction that peace, justice and reconciliation must always triumph over adversity."
Although officials offered no explanation for the decision, political insiders suggest the government aims to promote national unity. Koroma, who led the nation for 11 years, has consistently denied involvement in the coup attempt.
