Kieron Dyer Leaves Chesterfield to Take up Head Coach Role
The former Newcastle United and England midfielder begins his first managerial role after coaching at Ipswich Town and Chesterfield.
Former Newcastle United and England star Kieron Dyer has been appointed manager of National League club Southend United, signing an initial two-year deal at Roots Hall.
Previously, Dyer coached within the Ipswich Town academy and served as first-team coach at League Two club Chesterfield, while also shadowing managers Vincent Kompany and Craig Bellamy to prepare for this role.
The 47-year-old made over 250 appearances for Newcastle during an eight-year stay, enjoying his most successful playing period under former manager Sir Bobby Robson.
"I’m really excited to get started," Dyer said, aiming to reach the Football League with a team that will "try to dominate the ball and play with such a high intensity."
Dyer replaces former manager Kevin Maher, who departed the Shrimpers recently, concluding a search that ended speculation linking South Shields manager Ian Watson to the managerial vacancy.
