Shots fired as protesting contractors block Finance Minister in Abuja
Indigenous contractors demand payment of over ₦4 trillion owed for completed projects, with many facing asset seizures by banks due to unpaid debts, officials said.
- On Monday, All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria blocked the Ministry of Finance entrance, demanding payment of over 4 trillion and vowing to remain until paid.
- After unpaid completion claims, contractors said many completed federal projects remain unpaid and most people from January–May did not receive payments despite Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite's promise to release warrants.
- Only about N230 billion was released and that tranche ended in February, contractors say, while Minister of Finance Wale Edun told a Senate committee over 80% has been paid.
- Warning of severe consequences, contractors said the economy could suffer, accusing Minister of Finance Wale Edun of betrayal and alleging funds were diverted for re-election, with AICAN warning 'if they don't kill us, the economy of this country will die'.
- Between June and December no warrants were issued, AICAN cites 204 capital projects in dispute and says the president is aware.
