‘Not only About Money’: Sinner Refuses to Discuss Wimbledon Prize-Money Protest
The defending champion said he wanted to discuss tennis as players pressed for a larger share of tournament revenue.
Defending Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner joined top players on Saturday in limiting media commitments to 15 minutes, marking the start of a week-long protest over prize money distribution at the tournament.
Players are demanding a revenue-sharing formula to reach 22 per cent by 2030, as their current 14.4 per cent share of projected revenue trails the 14.9 per cent they received 10 years ago.
The All England Club increased the total prize pool by 20 per cent to £64.2 million, though Chair Debbie Jevans argued that establishing prize money as a ratio of projected revenue makes "no sense."
During his media session on Saturday, Sinner deflected questions about the dispute, stating it is "not only about the money" while citing the need for improvements in player welfare.
This collective action follows protests at the French Open, with players now planning further meetings with organizers at both the French Open and the upcoming US Open tournament.
