Pakistan, 13 Other Nations Denounce Somaliland 'Embassy' in Occupied Jerusalem
The ministers said the plan violates international law and reaffirmed support for Somalia’s sovereignty.
- On Saturday, foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and 13 other nations issued a joint statement condemning the "illegal and unacceptable" step of the "so-called Somaliland region" opening an embassy in Jerusalem.
- Dr. Mohamed Hagi, Somaliland's ambassador to Israel, defended the move, stating the region remains committed to "sovereign decisions and peaceful cooperation" with Israel based on "mutual interests."
- The ministers stated the move infringes on the legal status of East Jerusalem, which they maintain has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, calling such measures "null and void and without legal effect."
- Somalia rejected the move as a "deliberate attack" on its sovereignty, while the joint statement reaffirmed support for the unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
- Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the move "another significant step in strengthening relations between our countries," noting this mission will be the eighth embassy in Jerusalem.
