Seven dead, 82 missing in Indonesian landslide, disaster agency says

Heavy rain triggered a landslide that destroyed 30 homes, killing eight and leaving 82 missing, with search efforts complicated by unstable soil, officials said.

  • A nighttime landslide struck Pasirlangu village and a neighbouring West Bandung village at about 02:30AM on Saturday , with local news outlets showing homes buried under mud and debris.
  • Following days of heavy rain during the October to March rainy season, forest loss and land clearance heightened landslide risk by destabilising slopes, experts including David Gaveau said.
  • Officials reported at least seven dead and more than 80 missing, while BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari said eight were killed; more than thirty homes were destroyed and two dozen residents evacuated safely.
  • Rescue teams face extremely difficult, unstable terrain, complicating recovery despite military, police and volunteer rescuers assisting, West Bandung mayor Jeje Ritchie Ismail said.
  • The landslide adds to recent disasters following late last year's Sumatra island floods that killed around 1,200, this month's Siau island flash flood killing at least 16, and government revocation of permits.
