Serena Williams withdraws from Wimbledon doubles competition after knee injury
On Saturday, Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, withdrew from the Wimbledon doubles competition with sister Venus Williams due to a right knee injury.
Serena sustained the injury during her three-set singles match on Tuesday, where she was beaten 6-3, 6-7 , 6-3 by 20-year-old Australian player Maya Joint.
In an Instagram post, Serena shared images of four syringes used to drain fluid from her knee, alongside a video showing her walking with a cane.
Her singles return drew 1.8 million ESPN viewers, while 46-year-old Venus competed in the mixed doubles tournament on Friday with partner Kevin Krawietz.
With the U.S. Open approaching, Serena indicated she could return to competition soon, telling fans to "stay tuned to a city near you.
The 44-year-old American has ruled out playing alongside her sister due to the knee injury she has been suffering since Tuesday, when she fell in the singles draw.
