SERAP, editors demand repeal of Cybercrime Act over crackdown on press, free speech
- On May 3, 2025, in Ikeja, Lagos, SERAP together with the Nigeria Guild of Editors held a press event calling for the repeal of the Cybercrimes Act, citing its exploitation to undermine media freedom and suppress peaceful online expression.
- The Cybercrimes Act, enacted in 2015 and amended in 2024, was originally intended to combat fraud and cyberterrorism but has increasingly been used to target journalists, bloggers, and activists.
- Speakers expressed concern that the ambiguous language of Section 24 on cyberstalking facilitates arbitrary arrests and detentions, contravening both national legal standards and Nigeria’s obligations under international human rights frameworks.
- According to Reporters Without Borders, Nigeria fell 10 places to rank 122nd in the upcoming World Press Freedom Index, following 110 confirmed attacks on the press in 2024, highlighting growing suppression and diminished digital rights.
- The organizations demanded immediate release of detainees, suspension of the Act’s enforcement, comprehensive legal reforms, and called on President Tinubu’s government to uphold free speech and media freedom nationwide.
