Senior Ukrainian commander sees imminent 'turning point' in war
Biletsky says Ukraine can press its advantage with mid-range attacks and new technology as Russian forces lose momentum.
- On May 27, Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky told Reuters that Ukraine has a six-month window to seize battlefield initiative from Russia and strengthen its negotiating position, predicting a turning point within six to nine months after more than four years of war.
- Russian advances have slowed this year despite grinding gains since February 2022, as Biletsky said Russia's exhausted military suffers heavy field commander losses from costly assaults; Elon Musk's Starlink restrictions have further complicated Moscow's battlefield communications.
- Biletsky's units are deploying kamikaze drones and robots to replace 30% of infantry by 2027, with Ukraine leading in unmanned ground vehicles and heavy bomber drones. The Institute for the Study of War said Kyiv's forces are now "actively challenging the positional character of the war."
- Biletsky emphasized Ukraine must secure strategic points to speak with Russia from strength rather than weakness about a stable truce. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy claimed last week Ukraine retaken nearly 600 square km of territory in 2026, though Reuters could not independently verify the figure.
- Control of Donetsk remains a sticking point in stalled peace talks, with Russia demanding the entire region while Ukrainian forces defend the Fortress Belt where fighting rages in Kostiantynivka. Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed victory this month and predicted the war is nearing an end.
