For a week, Senegalese political parties, the government, the opposition and members of civil society discussed the steps to be taken to consolidate democracy, the conduct of elections, the financing of political parties, as well as rights and freedoms.
In Diamniadio, near Dakar, some 700 representatives of political parties, civil society, trade unions and academics met for a week to discuss a reform of the Senegalese political system. On 4 June, they made a series of recommendations on the organisation of elections, the financing of parties and the protection of rights and freedoms.
The national dialogue, wanted by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, concluded with an inventory of partially consensual recommendations. Perhaps it was difficult to agree on so many participants in such a short period of time.
The Minister of the Interior, Jean Baptiste Tine, expressed his satisfaction at the outcome of the national dialogue on the political system, which he described as an important step in the democratic evolution of Senegal.
