- On July 24, 2025, the U.S. Senate confirmed Matthew Lohmeier, elevating the former Space Force lieutenant colonel in a 52-46 vote to the Air Force Department’s No. 2 civilian post.
- Earlier, Lohmeier was removed from the Space Force in May 2021 after self-publishing a book alleging Marxist influence in the military.
- After a May review by the Senate Armed Services Committee, Republicans supported his nomination while Democrats opposed it, and Lohmeier pledged during his hearing to keep politics out of Air Force decisions.
- As under secretary, Lohmeier will join Air Force Secretary Troy Meink in leading the department, overseeing nearly 700,000 Airmen, Guardians and families under a $200 billion budget, and upon swearing in, he will relieve Edwin Oshiba.
