Trump Interstate? Cornyn Proposes Renaming U.S. Highway 287 as Interstate 47
Cornyn says the upgrade would save more than $5 billion in travel costs and support freight movement along the 1,800-mile corridor.
- On Monday, U.S. Senator John Cornyn introduced the I-47 Future Interstate Act to rename US-287 as Interstate 47, a route spanning nearly 1,800 miles from the Texas Gulf Coast to the Canadian border known as the "Trump Interstate."
- A Texas Department of Transportation study found the upgrade would generate 46,885 jobs and $11.6 billion in GDP gains by 2050, while Oklahoma lawmakers previously renamed a portion the "Donald J. Trump Highway" in 2021.
- Cornyn said the project would advance freight movement, improve route safety, and alleviate traffic congestion, claiming the bill honors "the most effective and influential president of our lifetime" while saving more than $5 billion.
- The legislative proposal emerges as Cornyn faces a competitive U.S. Senate runoff against Attorney General Ken Paxton, with early voting beginning Monday despite no presidential endorsement in the race.
- Senator Cynthia Lummis is cosponsoring the legislation for the route, which serves as a major trucking corridor ending in Choteau, Montana, and remains the second-longest three-digit highway in the United States.
