Sen. Dave McCormick hopes ‘three big things get done’ before session ends
McCormick says the Senate can still advance defense, permitting and election bills before year’s end, with voter ID support backed by 83% of Americans.
U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., identified a "lame duck" window to advance three legislative priorities: the National Defense Authorization Act, permitting reform, and the Save America Act before year-end.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, scheduled an initial procedural vote on the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 for November 9, aiming to streamline federal environmental reviews.
In July, the $1.15 trillion annual defense bill failed to reach the 60-vote threshold, breaking 50-46, while U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., was among lawmakers who did not vote.
McCormick aims to pass the Republican-backed Save America Act through Reconciliation 3.0, arguing that 83% of Americans support voter ID, though opponents contend it could federalize election oversight.
U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, D-12th District, and The People's Environmental Justice Caucus oppose the proposal, standing with nearly 200 community and labor groups against it, calling it a "gift to Big Oil and Big Tech.
