In Photos: Satellites Capture Total Solar Eclipse 2026 From Space
Meteosat-12 and other satellites produced a nearly continuous record of the eclipse, showing the Moon’s shadow cross Earth in about 90 minutes.
- On Aug. 12, 2026, the Meteosat-12 satellite captured the total solar eclipse from geostationary orbit 36,000km above Earth. The satellite recorded the Moon's dark shadow sweeping across the planet.
- During Wednesday, the Moon's central shadow, the umbra, swept across a narrow path including Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. FactsTotality lasted up to 2 minutes 18 seconds in these regions.
- The Moon's umbra measured about 180 miles wide, despite the Moon itself measuring 2,159 miles across. The shadow raced across Earth's surface at speeds exceeding 1,000 mph, varying by location.
- Unlike ground-based photographs, these satellite images reveal the eclipse as a planetary-scale event showing the shadow crossing mountains, oceans, and coastlines in roughly an hour and a half.
- Together, GOES, Meteosat, and DSCOVR created a nearly continuous record of the eclipse from three orbital perspectives. These different vantage points show how small the path of totality is compared with Earth's size.
