Rev. Frederick W. Neve (1855–1948) was called to Virginia from England to serve the congregations at St. Paul’s Church (in Ivy), and Emmanuel Church (Greenwood). He established his first mission outpost, St. John the Baptist Mission, in 1890, in the Ragged Mountains of Albemarle County, south of Ivy Depot. As the Ragged Mountain outreach grew in usefulness, Rev. Neve’s attention was drawn, in 1900, toward the hazy Blue Ridge Mountains to his west
