NEW YORK CITY, JUL 21 – Two undocumented immigrants with extensive criminal records were arrested after an attempted robbery and shooting of an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer, sparking criticism of sanctuary policies.
- This Monday, authorities arrested Cristian Aybar Berroa, law enforcement officials said, after the off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was ambushed late Saturday beneath the George Washington Bridge.
- Under Biden-era policies, DHS reported the two Dominican nationals were caught and released at the border, and DHS said NYC corrections ignored ICE detainers, leaving suspects free, officials said.
- In the shootout, two men on a moped, one firing at the officer who was shot in the arm and cheek, while return fire wounded the shooter.
- In response, Border czar Tom Homan vowed `flood the zone` with ICE agents, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called the suspects `scum of the earth`.
- Assaults on federal immigration officers have risen 830%, DHS said, and ICE plans boosted presence with identity-concealing measures in New York.
