Search Underway for Missing 14-Year-Old Swimmer in Wildwood, New Jersey, Officials Say
Rescuers used boats and helicopters after three swimmers were pulled from the surf and a fourth teen remained missing, officials said.
A large search effort continues for a 14-year-old boy who went missing in the surf near Schellenger Avenue in Wildwood, New Jersey, on Monday, June 1, 2026.
Just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, Wildwood Police officers were flagged down near Schellenger Avenue to assist swimmers in distress; three were rescued, though no lifeguards were on duty.
Multiple agencies including the Wildwood City Fire Department, North Wildwood Fire Department, and Wildwood Beach Patrol ALERT Team initially searched the surf, with the United States Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police deploying boats and helicopters.
Wildwood Fire Department Chief Ernie Troiano III said, "They did have an alert team, which had three personnel in headquarters that responded immediately and were deployed into the water like instantly," as one rescued swimmer remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Marine and aviation units continue searching for the missing teen, and Troiano warned beachgoers, "It's Mother Nature, and Mother Nature is a very powerful thing, and the best message we can get out is do not swim when the beaches are not guarded.
