- On Monday, the Supreme Court of India restrained a trial court from taking cognisance of the SIT's chargesheet against Ali Khan Mahmudabad and quashed the FIR with a closure report.
- Mahmudabad was arrested on May 18 after posts about Operation Sindoor referencing Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh led to two FIRs and charges under BNS Section 152 and sedition-like offences.
- The Court directed the constitution of an SIT comprising three IPS officers led by an IG-rank officer and including a woman member, limited to probing posts with a four-week deadline.
- The bench gave the professor's lawyers time to reply to the SIT report and ordered no further action until that review is complete, after the SIT filed a closure report in one FIR and a chargesheet on August 22.
- The bench questioned the use of sedition-like provisions for social media posts and the Court criticised the Haryana SIT for seizing devices and seeking decade-long travel records beyond the posts.
