Saudi Arabia: Rights groups condemn new record number of executions in 2025
- Saudi Arabia has broken its annual execution record again, reaching at least 347 this year, surpassing its 2024 total of 345 for a second consecutive year, Reprieve reported.
- Saudi authorities ended an unofficial moratorium in late 2022, prompting a rise in drug-related executions, with around two thirds convicted of non-lethal offences and 96 linked solely to hashish.
- Amnesty International said many convictions followed grossly unfair trials relying on torture-tainted confessions, and among those executed this year were journalist Turki al-Jasser and minors Abdullah al-Derazi and Jalal al-Labbad.
- The UN special rapporteur Dr Morris Tidball-Binz called for an immediate moratorium and safeguards, while Audrey Azoulay said `Capital punishment against journalists is a chilling attack on freedom of expression and press freedom`.
- Rights monitors say this is the bloodiest year of executions since monitoring began, with relatives speaking to the BBC describing terror and cellmates reporting families are not informed or given bodies.

Saudi Arabia has broken its record for the number of executions in a single year. At least 347 people have been executed in the country this year, according to data from the British activist group Reprieve, which monitors executions. The previous record was 345 last year. Only China and Iran execute more people annually.
