Trans row nurse tells tribunal that union 'failed to help me when I needed them most'

Jennifer Melle said the union responded too slowly after she was investigated over using a pronoun for a transgender patient.

  • On Monday, nurse Sandie Peggie presented evidence in her employment tribunal against the Royal College of Nursing , claiming the union failed to support her during a dispute over her gender-critical beliefs.
  • This action follows a December 2023 tribunal where Peggie secured a partial victory against NHS Fife after a changing room dispute with transgender medic Beth Upton at Kirkcaldy's Victoria Hospital.
  • Witness Jennifer Melle testified that the RCN was "neglecting the urgency" of her case; Melle questioned "why they didn't help me when I needed them the most" during her investigation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council .
  • Bethany Hutchison, president of the Darlington Nursing Union, testified she felt like a "naughty schoolgirl" with union officials and claimed the RCN had "abandoned their members, particularly their female members."
  • Representing the RCN, David Hay KC argued that union representatives were in contact regarding case options, stating there was "no way for the RCN to know that you had the deep-seated concerns" they weren't saying never.
