UK government failures led to Covid spreading ‘like wildfire’ in care homes, inquiry finds
Lady Heather Hallett said 43,000 care home deaths showed failures in planning, PPE and hospital discharges left residents exposed to the virus.
On Tuesday, the Covid-19 Inquiry released its report on the pandemic's handling in the adult care sector, documenting over 43,000 deaths between March 2020 and July 2022.
Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock's 2020 claim of a 'protective ring' around care homes was dismissed by the inquiry as rhetoric, leaving the sector with 'insufficient protection' during the crisis.
Described as a 'generational slaughter,' the inquiry found systemic failings allowed the virus to 'spread like wildfire' while the care sector was treated as an 'afterthought' during the pandemic.
Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK campaigners demanded accountability, calling past government rhetoric a 'sickening lie' and stating the report 'must establish who was responsible for the decisions that cost so many lives.'
Lady Hallett recommended mandatory end-of-life care training for future pandemic planning, emphasizing residents maintain a 'right to in-person visitors, except in the most grave or exceptional of circumstances.
