New York Just Beat San Francisco in Tech Talent Attraction. Wall Street and AI Are Fueling the Rise.
CBRE said New York’s tech talent workforce reached 394,300, topping the Bay Area as layoffs and growth reshaped the market.
- For the first time in 13 years, the New York Metro Area has surpassed the San Francisco Bay Area as the largest tech talent market, reaching 394,300 workers compared to 375,730, according to real estate and investment firm CBRE.
- The shift reflects contrasting workforce trends: mass layoffs contracted the Bay Area's tech workforce, while New York's finance sector aggressively hired tech talent and AI workers, according to Colin Yasukochi, executive director of CBRE's Tech Insights Center.
- San Francisco remains the leader in AI-specific employment with 98,699 workers, compared with New York Metro Area's 67,949, as AI-related roles now account for nearly one-third of all tech job postings in the United States.
- Driven by the AI boom, tech companies accounted for 58% of office leasing in San Francisco during the first half of this year, with AI companies driving about 10 million square feet of deals since 2023.
- Despite the hiring boom, roughly 71% of adults fear AI will lead to fewer jobs over the next two decades, up from 64% in 2024, according to a survey released by the Pew Research Center on Tuesday.
