The first martyr is considered to be Father Francisco Fernandez de Capillas, a Spanish Dominican, martyred in 1648 and beatified in 1909. He is part of a 120-member group of martyrs canonized on October 1, 2000, led by Augustine Zhao Rong, the first Chinese priest martyred for the faith.
On July 9, the Church recalls Augustine Zhao Rong and 119 companions, witnesses of the Gospel in China between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries.
