Seoul Says North Korea Border Work Violates Armistice

South Korea said the North has built fences and laid mines within 90 meters of the Military Demarcation Line, calling it an armistice breach.

  • On Monday, South Korea's military denounced North Korea's border fortification work as a violation of the armistice agreement that halted the 1950-53 Korean War, citing reports of new fencing and mines built dangerously close to the Military Demarcation Line.
  • According to a report published Monday, the North has installed barbed-wire fencing roughly 80 to 90 meters from the MDL and cleared land for mine-laying as close as 5 to 10 meters away.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared the South a "hostile state" in late 2023, subsequently increasing troops mobilized for border work from about 1,000 last year to 5,000 this year.
  • While Defense Ministry spokeswoman Chung Bin-na labeled the activity a violation, the United Nations Command stated such defensive measures "do not automatically constitute" a breach of the armistice agreement.
  • President Lee Jae Myung aims to improve inter-Korean relations, even as the defense buildup persists within the Demilitarized Zone, which extends 2 kilometers on either side of the border.
