Putin to Visit India for Brics Summit on Sept 12-13
The visit will test BRICS unity as the bloc’s 11 members navigate internal divisions and competing positions on global conflicts, officials said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, 2026, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed on Tuesday.
India hosts Russia while managing Western ties, focusing on defence, energy, and a $100 billion trade target; Putin's visit will reinforce the 'privileged strategic partnership' between Moscow and New Delhi.
To address lopsided trade where crude oil accounts for roughly 90 per cent of imports, India and Russia adopted a co-production model involving Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and United Aircraft Corporation.
The expanded BRICS bloc now includes 11 nations, though internal disagreements over global conflicts complicate consensus; External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently called for 'practical ways' to navigate geopolitical tensions.
Hosting Putin tests whether India can preserve BRICS as a Global South platform while managing competing interests; India is not a member of the International Criminal Court, enabling the visit.
