UK says surveillance plane dangerously intercepted by Russian jets last month
The Ministry of Defence said the unarmed RAF plane was on routine surveillance and the encounter raised the risk of escalation with Russia.
- Last month, two Russian jets "repeatedly and dangerously" intercepted an unarmed British Royal Air Force Rivet Joint surveillance plane over the Black Sea, the MoD said Wednesday.
- A Russian Sukhoi Su-35 triggered the spy plane's emergency systems, disabling its autopilot, while a Su-27 made six passes within 19 feet of its nose.
- Defense Secretary John Healey called the maneuvers "another example of dangerous and unacceptable" behavior, describing the incident as the most serious involving a British Rivet Joint since 2022.
- The MoD warned these actions create a "serious risk of accidents and potential escalation" between NATO and Russia, as the aircraft was securing NATO's eastern flank during its routine mission.
- Russian jets have engaged in numerous close-range intercepts with NATO aircraft in recent years, including incidents involving MQ-9 Reaper drones over Syria and the Black Sea.

UK says surveillance plane dangerously intercepted by Russian jets last month
• The UK Rivet Joint aircraft was unarmed and carrying out routine surveillance in international airspace over the Black Sea, the ministry said in a statement. • It was repeatedly intercepted by a Russian Su-35 aircraft, which flew close enough to trigger emergency systems on the British plane, it said.
Britain protested to the Russian side.
On a second occasion, a Russian jet Su-35 approached the British spy plane so close that it triggered its emergency systems, including the decommissioning of the autopilot, while the aircraft was carrying out a surveillance mission on international airspace
