Russia says foiled spy plot to steal MiG-31 jet armed with hypersonic missile

Ukrainian and British intelligence allegedly offered $3 million to recruit Russian pilots to steal a MiG-31 jet armed with a Kinzhal missile for a staged NATO provocation.

  • On Tuesday, Russia's Federal Security Service said it had foiled a plot by Ukrainian and British spies, state media reported.
  • The plan, the FSB says, aimed to be a large-scale `provocation`, and Ukrainian military intelligence sought to recruit Russian pilots for $3 million to steal the fighter.
  • State TV broadcast messages and recordings of a man said to work for Ukrainian and British intelligence who offered a Russian pilot citizenship.
  • RIA cited the FSB saying the aircraft was to be flown toward a NATO air base in Constanta, Romania, where it could have been shot down, while Moscow accuses London of stoking the Ukraine war.
  • Images from a 2018 test show a MiG-31 jet launching a Kinzhal hypersonic missile, an air-launched ballistic missile Moscow calls hypersonic and capable of manoeuvring flight paths.
