Russia Launches 426 Drones and 24 Missiles in Massive Overnight Assault on Ukraine
KYIV CITY MUNICIPALITY, KYIV CITY REGION, JUL 21 – Russia launched over 550 drones and missiles in a large-scale assault killing two and wounding 15, highlighting Ukraine's urgent need for expanded Western air defense support, officials said.
- On Monday, Russia launched 426 drones and 24 missiles, lighting the night sky with explosions and with 23 drones striking their targets, Ukrainian Air Force said.
- At the Alabuga plant in Tatarstan, mass production churns out tens of thousands of kamikaze drones, and Russia now makes 2,000 Shaheds per month with plans to nearly triple output.
- Between April and June, Ukrainian Air Force data shows 15% of drones breached defenses, up from 5%, and FPV interceptors cost far less than $4 million Patriot PAC-3 missiles.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes killed two people and wounded 15, including a 12-year-old, and officials reported fires at a Kyiv kindergarten, supermarket and warehouses.
- Highlighting vulnerabilities, the assault reinforced calls for more air defense support and the U.K. government said John Healey will launch a '50-day drive' to deliver weapons.
