On September 24 this year, the Sunday Independent’s Mark Tighe reported the concerns of Professor Donal O’Shea – the HSE’s national clinical lead for obesity and a consultant endocrinologist with the National Gender Service (NGS) – that treatment for young people who identify as transgender was being led by activists rather than qualified doctors and that this was “dangerous for patients”.
