Europe’s human rights court finds Russia committed violations in Ukraine and was behind Flight MH17
UKRAINE, JUL 9 – The European Court of Human Rights ruled Russia violated international law in Ukraine and held it responsible for the 2014 MH17 downing that killed 298 people, including 196 Dutch nationals.
- On July 9, 2025, Europe’s top human rights court in Strasbourg ruled that Russia committed violations in Ukraine and was responsible for downing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in 2014.
- The ruling was based on evidence indicating that parts of eastern Ukraine held by separatist forces were effectively under Russian control and received military aid as well as political and economic backing from Russia since the conflict began in 2014.
- On July 17, 2014, Flight MH17, a Boeing 777, was downed over separatist-held eastern Ukraine by a Buk missile of Russian origin, resulting in the deaths of all 298 passengers and crew, including 196 Dutch nationals.
- Thomas Schansman, whose son Quinn, aged 18, was killed in the MH17 incident, described the decision as an important moment in identifying those truly accountable and emphasized that giving up the fight would be the worst possible response.
- The court’s rulings represent a significant step toward legal responsibility for Russia, aligning with initiatives such as Ukraine’s recent approval to establish a new international tribunal aimed at holding high-ranking Russian leaders accountable for the large-scale 2022 invasion.
