A new research paper has investigated the factors that have "legitimised" the creation and acceptance of a casual academic workforce in Australia. The rise of a “casualised” workforce: A conceptual account of the institutional forces legitimising contingent academic employment in Australia analysed changes in the workforce between the late 1980s, when casualisation started to become common, and its current institutionalised state. Casual staff don't have guaranteed hours or annual or sick leave, and extra loading payments often don't make up for, in terms of pay, the lost hours from being casually employed. The problems of insecure work has become a central argument for unions and staff amid investigations into university councils, wage issues and governance.
