Royal Navy Tracks Russian Spy Ship Near Outer Hebrides During NATO Drill

The deployments tested Britain’s ability to monitor Russian movements and protect NATO exercises, with more than 2,000 personnel involved in allied drills.

  • Between September 29 and October 8, the Royal Navy tracked the Russian Vishnya-class intelligence ship Viktor Leonov near the Outer Hebrides as it monitored NATO's Exercise Strike Warrior, a multinational drill involving more than 2,000 personnel.
  • Operation Iceblast, designed to test the Merlin Helicopter Force's rapid deployment capability, was launched as Russian maritime activity in British waters increased 25 per cent during the first seven months of 2026 compared with 2025.
  • Separately, HMS Dauntless, a Type 45 destroyer, and HMS Tyne, a patrol ship, tracked RFN Neustrashimy and RFN Aleksandr Shabalin as the Russian vessels escorted cargo ships through the English Channel from October 1 to October 14.
  • Captain James Hall, commanding officer of RNAS Culdrose, stated the operations demonstrated Britain's readiness, saying "The Merlin Helicopter Force stands ready to answer the call at a moment's notice" to protect national interests.
  • Amid these interceptions, Chancellor John Healey admitted on Sunday the 3 per cent defense spending target is a 'target' rather than a firm commitment by 2030, while the government continues constraining Russia's shadow fleet through sanctions on more than 500 vessels.
