Four Nations Must ‘Move at Same Pace Together’, Burnham Says on Devolution
The meeting launched a policy sprint on regional empowerment and reindustrialisation, with officials set to explore more powers for employment support and innovation funding.
On Friday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham met leaders from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland in Glasgow to discuss devolving regional powers for employment support and reindustrialization funding.
Since entering Downing Street this summer, Burnham has prioritized devolution, pledging to 'rewire the state' and hand more control to regional authorities while ruling out independence referendums.
A 'policy sprint' led by No10 North will work toward 'regional empowerment, reindustrialisation and achieving good growth in every postcode,' with officials from each government collaborating.
Scottish First Minister John Swinney called the meeting 'a welcome start,' while Welsh leader Rhun ap Iowerth welcomed steps toward fiscal and borrowing powers for Wales.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting suggested the challenge is 'devolving more power also from Holyrood to local government across Scotland,' as Burnham insists nations must 'move at the same pace together.
