Royal Mail Urges People to Put Four-Word Sign Out Ahead of Christmas
Royal Mail said dog attacks on staff rose 2% to 2,197 last year as it warned of delays and injuries.
With Christmas approaching, Royal Mail is urging dog owners to display warning signs reading "I have a dog" to alert delivery staff to potential risks before approaching homes.
Safety Director Lizz Lloyd emphasized that dog attacks remain a major safety issue, with around 2,000 postal workers injured annually from incidents causing serious physical and emotional trauma.
New figures show dog attacks on postal workers increased by 2% over the past year, reaching 2,197 incidents. Sheffield topped the list with 66 reported attacks, followed by Portsmouth with 60 and the Kent, Sussex, and Surrey area with 56.
Where attacks occur, Royal Mail may suspend deliveries to an address while assessing risk, potentially disrupting mail services. Postal staff are instructed to wait until dogs are safely restrained before approaching.
Reducing attacks ultimately depends on pet owners taking responsibility and ensuring dogs are properly secured whenever someone arrives at the door, Lizz Lloyd said.
