Suspect arrested as fire engulfs Nazi guest house 'Eagle's Nest', German police say

About 200 firefighters battled the blaze as police investigated possible arson and detained a suspect, with no injuries reported.

  • On Friday, a fire erupted at the Kehlsteinhaus in Berchtesgaden, Adolf Hitler's former Eagle's Nest retreat in Bavaria. Bavarian Police detained a suspicious person following the blaze, which is under criminal investigation.
  • The site once housed the Nazi leader's heavily fortified country residence where Hitler relaxed with companion Eva Braun and wrote part of "Mein Kampf." It remains one of the few Hitler-era monuments to survive World War II bombing unscathed.
  • Firefighters struggled to reach the building, located at an altitude of 1,834 meters , with their engines. Police added that entering the vicinity required respiratory protective equipment due to the blaze's intensity.
  • "The criminal police investigation is ongoing," Police spokeswoman Lisa Maier said. Emergency services arrived to find the building completely ablaze, though authorities reported no injuries had been identified as of yet.
  • The Kehlsteinhaus, a symbol of the Nazi regime, survived World War II bombing unscathed and currently operates as a popular restaurant. The site remains among only a few Hitler-era monuments from that period still standing.
