Toxic Drug Deaths in B.C. Down in May and June, 40 per Cent Below Peak
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUL 31 – Nearly 70% of deaths involved males aged 30 to 59, with fentanyl detected in 70% of cases, according to BC Coroners Service data for May and June 2025.
- According to a July 31, 2025, report by the BC Coroners Service, the daily unregulated drug death averages were approximately 4.7 in May and 4.9 in June.
- The BC Coroners Service notes the rise in carfentanil detections, with fentanyl and its analogues remaining the most common substances detected, despite overall deaths declining after December 2023.

In May and June, 58 people died due to unregulated toxic drugs in the Island Health region, and a total of 292 people died province-wide, according to new data from the BC Coroner’s Service.
