Former Press Secretary Ron Nessen dies
- Ron Nessen, a veteran broadcast journalist and former press secretary for President Gerald Ford, died in Bethesda, Maryland, on Wednesday.
- Nessen's career in journalism included reporting and editing for United Press International, covering civil rights, the 1964 presidential campaign, and Lyndon Johnson's White House, before joining NBC News and serving five tours in Vietnam, where he sustained a near-fatal chest wound from a grenade fragment.
- In September 1974, Nessen replaced Jerald F. TerHorst as Ford's spokesman six weeks into Ford's presidency after terHorst resigned in protest over Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon, and Nessen aimed to restore integrity to the position.
- During his two years and four months as press secretary, Nessen fostered a positive relationship with Ford, increased reporter access, allowed follow-up questions, and arranged for Ford to appear on NBC's 'Meet the Press', even hosting Saturday Night Live on April 17, 1976, during Ford's reelection bid, though he worried it was an ego-driven mistake.
- After Ford's defeat in 1976, Nessen authored two books, 'It Sure Looks Different from the Inside' published in 1978 and 'Making the News, Taking the News' in 2011, and engaged in writing, freelance work, and executive roles at Marston & Rothenberg Public Affairs, Mutual Broadcasting System, NBC Radio Network, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, and the Brookings Institution.
