Rocket Lab advanced the launch to deploy four DiskSats testing electric propulsion and orbit-change in low Earth orbit, marking the 20th Electron launch of 2025.
- Rocket Lab accelerated its Electron mission to launch the STP-S30 mission for U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 2, MARS, Wallops Island, Virginia, with a window opening December 18 at 05:00 UTC.
- Led by the DoW’s Space Test Program and Rocket Systems Launch Program, STP-S30 uses DiskSats developed by The Aerospace Corporation and funded by NASA's Small Spacecraft & Distributed Systems program, managed by SSC System Delta 89 Capability Development Branch.
- Four DiskSats will ride aboard the Electron rocket, each roughly three feet in diameter and stacked inside a launch dispenser, to be deployed into a 550km low Earth orbit.
- The mission comes less than a month after Rocket Lab’s most recent LC-2 launch and will be Electron’s 20th launch of the year and 78th mission overall, with a $14.4 million Space Force contract in 2024.
- The DiskSat architecture is intended to address VLEO drag by using flat edge-on orientation and electric propulsion, enabling sustained operations below about 300 kilometers despite rapid orbital decay.
