Both Women and Men with Covered Faces Cannot Buy Gold, Silver in Bihar, Says Jewellers’ Body

The federation mandates face visibility in Bihar jewellery shops to curb theft amid gold prices at ₹1.40 lakh per 10 grams, aiming to improve security without targeting communities.

  • On Wednesday , the All India Jewellers and Gold Federation Bihar chapter said jewellery shops may refuse entry or sale to customers with covered faces unless shown for identification.
  • After a spate of robberies, federation officials say masked robbers and groups of three-four persons commit thefts, so shop owners and staff will politely request customers to show their faces for security.
  • No shop staff may forcibly remove anyone's hijab or burqa, and the rule applies equally to men who cover faces, with 10 gm gold around ₹ 1.40 lakh, the federation said.
  • RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed said the federation's decision is unconstitutional and impractical, alleging the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh back moves curtailing religious freedom.
  • Following a December 15, 2025 controversy in Patna, the federation said the move is not discriminatory and noted similar precautions exist in other states, with Bihar applying it statewide.
