Florida Man Survives Shark Attack While Spearfishing in the Bahamas
Eddie Jarmakowicz underwent a 4.5-hour surgery to repair eight tendons after a reef shark bit his left arm during a spearfishing trip, hospital officials said.
- On Aug. 16, Eddie Jarmakowicz, a Riviera Beach spear fisherman, was bitten on his left arm and hand by a reef shark about 6 feet long while spearfishing off Grand Cay, Bahamas.
- During a spearfishing dive at about 20 to 25 feet, Jarmakowicz was reaching to grab a fish when the shark bit his hand, he later recounted.
- He swam back to the Square Grouper about 10 feet away, then received emergency care at the local clinic on Grand Cay before being flown to Stuart and HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where surgeons performed a four-and-a-half-hour operation on at least eight tendons.
- Surgeons reported the operation succeeded, doctors said he retained movement in all fingers and called the result a miracle, with recovery expected to take six to eight months at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
- Reflecting on the ordeal, Jarmakowicz said the shark was so fast it looked like a torpedo, and he plans to share safety lessons with the spearfishing community.
