Rights group calls for release of two French journalists held in Togo
Two French journalists detained in Togo since late July have been placed in pre-trial detention and charged with "false statements", Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has said, calling for their immediate release.
Two French directors have been detained in this West African country since 27 July. Arrested while shooting a documentary, they are charged with false statements, the Togolese authorities claiming that they have not received an application for accreditation. Togo is the subject of criticism for its repressive measures towards freedom of expression, notes the international press.
Two French directors, who were filming a documentary for TV5 Monde in northern Togo, were arrested on 27 July 2026. However, they had permission from the Ministry of Culture. The authorities accused them of not having done the procedures in "good and due form".
