Gordie Howe International Bridge ribbon-cutting set to go ahead this week
Testing is wrapping up as officials await final Canada-U.S. signoff before the $4.7 billion span can open to traffic.
On Friday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Ontario and Michigan, sources told The Detroit News, marking completion of the $4.8 billion project after eight years of construction.
President Donald Trump threatened earlier this year to block the crossing's opening without concessions, complicating the project Canada funded under a 2012 deal with former Governor Rick Snyder.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin testified last week that Customs & Border Protection staff are "good to go" to facilitate travel across the span, while officials confirm testing of all systems at customs plazas is wrapping up.
Despite the upcoming ceremony, it remains unclear whether the bridge will open to vehicle traffic immediately, as the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority continues final quality reviews and commissioning activities.
The crossing holds strong support from the automobile industry and will join the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, providing direct connections to Highway 401 and I-75 for regional commerce.
