'Hidden galaxies' could be smoking gun in universe riddle
- Researchers potentially discovered previously hidden galaxies in a deep far-infrared image of the distant universe.
- Scientists created the image by stacking 141 observations from the Herschel Space Observatory's SPIRE instrument.
- The stacked image, called the Herschel-SPIRE Dark Field, is the deepest far-infrared view and revealed almost 2,000 galaxies.
- Dr. Pearson stated that optical telescopes only read half of the universe's story due to obscuring dust.
- Confirmation of these galaxies could alter current models of galaxy evolution and explain missing energy at long wavelengths.

Galaxies Merge in NASA Supercomputer Simulation - Videos from The Weather Channel
A new simulation released by NASA’s Ames Research Institute reveals a stunning vision of the evolution of a galaxy. Blue influx gases, white stars and red satellite galaxies are shown moving thousands of miles per second into massive collisions that eventually form a galaxy roughly the same size as our Milky Way. The supercomputers at Ames’ Advanced Supercomputing facility in Silicon Valley rendered 12.5 billion years of galaxy formation into a …
Hidden Galaxies Could “Break All of our Current Models” of Galactic Evolution, Astronomers Say
New research suggests that hidden galaxies offering a glimpse into the past could reveal previously unknown secrets of the universe, potentially forcing scientists to reconsider current models of galactic evolution. These galaxies may also account for the production of infrared light, helping to balance the universe’s energy budget to match the maximum observed levels. A team of researchers from STFC RAL Space and Imperial College London has fou…
Astronomers Think They've Found the Universe's Missing Infrared Light
One of the things about astronomy that captivates me is that for every question we answer, we open up a whole bunch of other questions. Dark matter and dark energy are one such phenomenon that rather continues to confound us. There’s also the mystery of missing infrared light too but a team of astronomers think they may have found it! The team examined a region of sky using the Herschel Space Telescope and, by staking 141 images, found where ind…
'Hidden galaxies' could be smoking gun in universe riddle
Astronomers have peered back in time to find what looks like a population of "hidden" galaxies that could hold the key to unlocking some of the universe's secrets. If their existence is confirmed it would "effectively break current models of galaxy numbers and evolution." The possible galaxies may also provide the missing piece of the puzzle for the energy generation in the universe in infrared light.
