Republican Kim Hammer Wins Election for Secretary of State in Arkansas – WTOP News
Hammer won with nearly 56% of the vote after campaigning on election security and ballot-access restrictions that drew legal challenges.
On Tuesday, Republican state Sen. Kim Hammer was elected Arkansas secretary of state, defeating Democrat Kelly Grappe and Libertarian Michael Pakko. He succeeds Secretary of State Cole Jester, who was ineligible for reelection.
Hammer secured the position by leveraging about 16 years of legislative experience in the General Assembly. He previously emerged from a razor-tight runoff, beating Bryan Norris by fewer than 1,000 votes.
With an estimated 99% of votes counted, the Associated Press reported Hammer received 490,330 votes, while Grappe secured 347,409 and Pakko 40,162. Hammer won with nearly 56% of the vote.
As Arkansas' top election official, Hammer pledged to improve civic engagement by visiting schools to boost the state's low voter participation rate. He also intends to continue streamlining services for businesses.
Hammer sponsored laws restricting ballot initiatives, which opponents like Grappe criticized as an attack on direct democracy. A federal judge ruled those laws unconstitutional earlier this year.
