Ilhan Omar says ‘no justification’ for Trump admin’s Somali fraud crackdown
Minneapolis hosts over 2,400 federal agents amid a $9 billion fraud probe, drawing criticism for targeting Somali and immigrant communities, Rep. Ilhan Omar said.
- Yesterday, Rep. Ilhan Omar denounced a surge of federal agents to Minneapolis targeting Somalis and other immigrants, saying the Trump administration has sown confusion and chaos and warned `There is no reason for them to use this level of rhetoric.`
- The Minneapolis area now hosts one of the largest concentrations of DHS agents with more than 2,400 deployed amid a federal probe involving more than 75 defendants in the Feeding Our Future program.
- On Jan. 5, Gov. Tim Walz announced he won't seek reelection and urged the White House to withdraw agents, stating `He wants to focus on defending our state and not defending a seat`.
- The administration says the surge is necessary to conduct immigration enforcement and investigate fraud, while President Trump and Republican lawmakers threaten to suspend SNAP and child care funding affecting the Somali community.
- On `Face the Nation`, Omar said the response is unnecessary and criticized federal actions, quoting `There is no reason for them to use this level of rhetoric.
