Renowned socialist leader Baba Adhav, 95, passes away
Baba Adhav, a key figure in Maharashtra’s socialist and social reform movements, championed labor rights and anti-caste causes throughout his 95 years, officials said.
- Baba Adhav, 95, passed away in Poona Hospital, Pune on Monday after a cardiac arrest at 8.25 p.m., following 12 days in the ICU since November 24.
- Known for founding worker organisations, Baba Adhav dedicated decades to organising hamals, rickshaw drivers, and construction workers, including the Hamal Panchayat and 'One Village- One Water Source' campaign.
- Mortal remains will be kept at Hamal Bhavan, Market Yard, Pune from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last rites between 4 pm and 5 pm and cremation at 5.30 p.m. at the electric crematorium.
- Condolences poured in from across the spectrum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rahul Gandhi, and Uddhav Thackeray expressing grief while some autorickshaw and hawkers' unions planned Tuesday closures.
- With his passing, the movement faces a leadership void as his decades of organising Maharashtra's progressive and labour‑rights movements and last year's EVM protest drew on Mahatma Phule's ideology and Ambedkarite tradition.
