Remains of 44 Revolutionary War Soldiers Laid to Rest
All but four of the 44 soldiers were placed at a new memorial as the remaining caskets await a ceremony marking the nation's 250th anniversary.
On Wednesday, a motorcade transported the remains of 44 Revolutionary War soldiers from the New York State Museum in Albany to Lake George Battlefield Park for reburial in a new memorial.
After their 2019 discovery during a construction dig, 140 volunteers spent 15 months recovering the remains, which are believed to be members of the Continental Army who died 250 years ago.
Bioarchaeology technician Julie Weatherwax identified 44 individuals by reconstructing dental arcades from over 800 loose teeth, while New York State Museum Curator Lisa Anderson linked the burials to the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion via uniform buttons.
The "Repose of the Fallen" memorial will be formally dedicated this Friday, May 22, while four caskets remain at a nearby church to be safeguarded until the ceremony.
Escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders and NY-Penn Military Vehicle Collectors Club, the procession honored soldiers whom Karl Remmers, president of the club, called "our first true American heroes.
