Reds Get 3-Run Homer From De La Cruz and Outlast Cardinals 7-6 in 11 Innings to Split Doubleheader
Elly De La Cruz and Nathaniel Lowe homered as Cincinnati won its first game started by a pitcher other than Chase Burns or Andrew Abbott since April 25.
On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 in the 11th inning, splitting their doubleheader. Spencer Steer scored the winning run on a Blake Dunn single.
Elly De La Cruz and Nathaniel Lowe homered to build a 5-1 lead for Cincinnati in the fifth. Tony Santillan squandered a two-run lead in the ninth, forcing extra innings.
With Steer at third, Dunn hit a one-hopper to shortstop Masyn Winn. Winn made a lunging stop but catcher Yohel Pozo failed to apply the tag in time, and a replay review upheld the safe call.
The Reds split the doubleheader after losing the opener 8-1, where Cardinals debutant Bryan Torres hit a two-run homer. Pierce Johnson earned the win, pitching two perfect innings in relief.
Cardinals LHP Matthew Liberatore faces RHP Brady Singer in Sunday's series finale. Cincinnati is 2-10 in division play, seeking momentum after Saturday's comeback victory.
