Thousands of supporters blocked NH-44 and pelted stones at police after the BJP chose Ashutosh Tiwari over Narottam Mishra, officials said.
- The Madhya Pradesh BJP faced a rebellion in Datia after denying a ticket to former Home Minister Narottam Mishra, fielding Ashutosh Tiwari instead. BJP District President Raghuvir Saran and several councillors resigned in protest on Friday.
- Mishra, who has represented the Datia Assembly constituency since 2008, had supporters who expected him to receive the nomination after months of preparation. His followers termed the decision unilateral and demanded a change.
- SP Datia Mayur Khandelwal told ANI that more than 3,000 individuals blocked National Highway-44, creating a 15 km traffic jam affecting bordering districts. Around 4 am, protesters pelted stones at police, who responded with tear gas.
- More than 6 police personnel suffered serious injuries during clashes, with authorities taking several individuals into custody after clearing the highway. Khandelwal warned that "'chakka jaam' will not be tolerated."
- As the BJP attempts to manage the fallout from the bypoll candidate selection, Tiwari described Mishra as "a very senior leader" and expressed hope for his support, though tensions remain high.
